Dimension-Based Weight Verification for Metal Sheets and Rods with Inveck

Measure the Size. Get the Weight. Skip the Scale.

A metals company in India, holding plates, sheets and rods, verifies stock by entering dimensions in the Inveck app. The system calculates each item's weight from its density and reports variances in kilograms directly — no weighbridge, no manual calculation.

Metals — Sheets, Plates and RodsClient overview

Who is the client?

The client stocks and processes metal sheets, plates and round bars in India for fabrication, engineering and construction customers. Its yards and warehouses hold material in many grades — mild steel, stainless steel, aluminium and alloy steels — and in many sizes, including cut pieces and offcuts.

The ERP carries all of this stock in kilograms. Physically, it lies on the floor as heavy plates in stacks and bundles of rods, where every piece has a different size and putting each one on a scale is not practical.

The problem

Challenges that held them back

The books were in kilograms, but the floor could only be counted in pieces and sizes. Bridging the two was slow, costly and error-prone.

01

Weighing everything was impossible

Plates weighing hundreds of kilograms and long rod bundles needed cranes and weighbridges. Weighing each piece would have stopped operations for days.

02

Manual weight calculations

Auditors measured pieces, then worked out weight by hand or in Excel using density tables. Different people used different formulas and rounding.

03

Unit mix-ups

Dimensions in millimetres, metres and inches, and densities in g/cm³ or kg/m³, produced errors of ten or a thousand times.

04

Variances in pieces, books in kg

Count sheets showed pieces and sizes; the ERP showed kilograms. Reconciliation needed a separate conversion exercise.

05

Offcuts and cut pieces ignored

Odd-sized pieces were hard to value, so they were estimated or left out.

06

Slow, disputed results

Weight figures built by hand were questioned by finance and auditors, and the full reconciliation took three weeks.

The solution

How Inveck solved it

Inveck lets auditors count what they can measure and leaves the weight to the system. For a sheet or plate, the auditor enters length, breadth and thickness (height). For a rod, length and radius. Each item carries its density factor, so Inveck calculates the weight of every piece and compares it with book stock in kilograms.

Implementation process

Book stock in kilograms was uploaded as a milestone. Each item was tagged with its shape (sheet or rod) and its density factor by grade — for example, mild steel, stainless steel or aluminium. The count screen was configured to show the right dimension fields for each shape, in fixed units, so auditors only measure and type. Auditors download the milestone, count offline in the yard, and sync when back online.

01

Shape-specific inputs

Sheets ask for length, breadth and thickness; rods ask for length and radius.

02

Density factor per item

Each grade's density is set once at setup, so every auditor uses the same value.

03

Automatic weight calculation

The system converts dimensions to weight — no calculators, tables or Excel.

04

Fixed units

Dimension units are set on the input fields, removing mm, m and inch mix-ups.

05

Piece-by-piece entries

Every plate, rod or offcut is its own entry, so odd sizes are counted, not estimated.

06

Variance in kg

Calculated weight is compared with ERP stock and shown as excess or shortage in kilograms.

07

Offline counting

Milestone data stays on the device for open yards and sheds with poor network.

08

Pending and variance review

Review Pending and Review Excess/Short ensure nothing is missed before closure.

09

Digital sign-off and audit trail

Every entry carries its dimensions, user and timestamp; the Incharge signs on the device.

In detail

How It Works on the Floor

The auditor's job ends at the measuring tape; weight and variance come from the system.

How It Works on the Floor

Dimension-to-variance flow · sheets and rods

Because density is set per item at setup, a stainless plate and a mild steel plate of the same size get their correct, different weights automatically.

In detail

The Calculation, with a Worked Example

Inveck works out volume from the shape's dimensions and multiplies it by the item's density.

Sheets and plates

W_{\text{sheet}} = L \times B \times T \times \rho

Rods and round bars

W_{\text{rod}} = \pi \times r^{2} \times L \times \rho

Where W is weight, L length, B breadth, T thickness (height), r radius and ρ the item's density.

Worked example for mild steel, density 7,850 kg/m³ (illustrative figures):

ItemAuditor entersVolume per pieceWeight per piecePieces countedCounted weightBook stockVariance

MS round barL 6,000 mm · r 10 mm0.0018850 m³14.80 kg1502,219.54 kg2,150.00 kg+69.54 kg

The auditor typed only dimensions and piece counts. Every weight and variance above is calculated by the system.

What changed

The results

The client now verifies heavy metal stock in kilograms without lifting a single piece onto a scale.

01

No weighing during verification

Cranes and weighbridges stay on production work; auditors only need a measuring tape and the app.

02

No manual calculations

Weight is worked out by the system from dimensions and density, the same way for every auditor and every piece.

03

Variance straight in kilograms

Physical stock is compared with ERP stock in the same unit, so excess and shortage are ready to post.

04

Unit and formula errors eliminated

Fixed units and preset densities remove the conversion mistakes that used to create false variances.

05

Offcuts counted properly

Every cut piece and odd size gets its own measured entry and calculated weight.

06

Faster close

Verification and reconciliation that took three weeks now close in four days, with results finance and auditors accept.

07

Full audit trail

Each weight can be traced back to the measured dimensions, the density used, who measured it and when.

Client feedback
Weighing every plate and bar during a stock count was never realistic, and calculating weights by hand led to endless arguments over the numbers. With Inveck, our team just measures and enters the size; the system does the rest and gives us the variance in kilograms against our books. Verification is faster, and nobody questions the figures any more.
